Summer is one of those special times of year on campus. The grounds look so special in the sun as the hard work of our horticultural students continues to bloom and blossom.
During the last academic year, our Supported Learning Students worked tremendously hard to design and create their own garden. The theme of the garden was ‘Plants for Pollinators’. Learners bought bulbs and seeds and set about propagating plants throughout the year. They designed the garden for easy access and installed raised beds using a variety of hand tools and measuring equipment.
Learners wrote risk assessments for the tasks they were carrying out and learnt about safe manual handling - over 30 bags of soil, compost and manure were added to the site! The plot that was designed is still in full bloom and the learners are quite rightly very proud of their work which has produced a truly beautiful garden. Who would have thought that a £1.99 pack of seed would produce over 300 helichrysum plants!
The plot has also been a source of cut flowers for the floristry department.
