Introduction to Dog Grooming

Level 1

Study mode Part time
Location Moulton
Level Level 1
Start date 25 March 2025
Duration 10 weeks

This ten week course is for students aged 19+ looking for an introduction to dog grooming.

Whether you just wish to bath your own pet dogs safely and effectively at home, or you wish to try a short course to see if dog grooming would suit your change in career, then this is the introduction course for you.

You will learn the basics of how to bath, brush and dry a variety of dogs safely. You will also learn the basic signs of dog behaviour and how to assess whether the dog is comfortable being bathed.

The course will cover the various types of equipment and consumables required in a dog grooming salon and also elements of customer service and communication skills, ideal if you are considering starting your own dog grooming business in the future.

The cost of this course is £800. You may also need to purchase closed toe, flat shoes and/or an apron to wear during practical sessions.

You will need to attend college one day per week between 9.15am - 3.30pm for a full day of teaching. The lessons will be a mix of practical and theory lessons.

There will be a basic knowledge paper test and also a practical assessment on bathing and drying a dog.

After successful completion of this course you could progress onto a Level 2 qualification in Dog Grooming and then a Level 3 course with salon experience.

Ultimately you could work towards a career as a Dog Grooming Assistant or Dog Grooming Stylist / Salon Manager.

No formal qualifications required, however you should be comfortable in dealing with dogs of all breeds and sizes, and should be able to read, write and do basic maths to a Level 1 standard.

All equipment can be provided at a basic standard, however if you wish to progress onto the Level 2 course or begin to trim dogs then you should buy your own dog grooming scissors.

You are required to wear closed toe shoes at all times, and a grooming apron or tunic would be useful as dog hair tends to stick to clothing.
