If you are looking to start a career within the dog grooming industry, then this qualification is the perfect first step for you.

Working with animals is extremely rewarding, but it can require long hours, dedication and enthusiasm within the role is a key to success. Our Dog Grooming course will provide the foundation skills required for dog grooming. This course will teach you the basics of grooming, gaining knowledge on anatomical features, breeds characteristics and learning about behaviour of dogs.

This qualification is suitable if you are 19+ years old, or over.

  • Correct handling of dogs, including how to prepare and bath dogs
  • Health checking and recognising problems
  • Basic first aid for injuries that can occur while grooming / trimming (clipper rash, cut pads etc)
  • Initial prep work for progression into styling
  • You will learn basic clip and trim techniques on a dog ready for styling
  • You will learn various drying techniques to dry different coat types
  • Ear maintenance and nail clipping
  • Health and safety in the salon
  • Guidance in running your own salon and customer relations

This course is held once a week in the salon, split into practical and theory lessons.

Days for on-campus training

Online learning which will include self-study from home.

You will learn how to groom in an industry standard salon.

A theory exam which will cover the knowledge and understanding within the qualification and a synoptic assignment which requires the learners to identify and use effectively in an integrated way an appropriate selection of skills, techniques, concepts, theories, and knowledge from across the content area.

Working as a dog grooming assistant.

You could also progress on to study an iPET Network Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming & Salon Management qualification which enables you to become a fully qualified dog groomer, ready to start your own business. Guidance for business set up is included on this course.

There are no formal entry requirements, however basic skills in literacy and numeracy (ideally GCSE English and maths grade D/3 minimum) are required. This course is designed for those that have completed Level 1 or have some industry experience of dog grooming, dog handling and have knowledge of dog breeds, coat types and grooming equipment.

Set in an industry standard salon, this course will give you realistic experience in a dog grooming environment. You will groom different breeds, coat types and temperaments preparing you for the dog grooming world once you gain your qualification.

You will need a dog grooming tunic, apron, ear defenders and face mask as well as safe, enclosed non-slip shoes. Pen and notepad.

We have all the basic equipment for the course but you may like to invest in purchasing your own set of scissors - to include a curved scissor, a thinning scissor and a straight scissor - advice can be given at interview.

Please note you will be asked to source up to 5 dogs to groom during the course.
