Dog Grooming

Level 3

Study mode Part time
Location Moulton
Level Level 3
Start date 9 September 2024 / 11 September 2024
Duration 1 year

This course will teach you how to groom, clip and style a variety of dog breeds and coat types, as well as covering various aspects of salon management. This will enable you to progress in the dog grooming industry into positions such as supervisor or salon manager, or enable you to set up and run your own dog grooming business.

You will learn how to practically groom and style a variety of breeds and coat types on this programme as well as the theoretical aspects of salon management. Modules to be completed include Health and Safety, Animal Welfare & Legislation, Customer Care, Business Management, Planning and Equipment and Styling as well as Animal Behaviour and Handling. Dog first aid is also a mandatory part of the programme.

The fees for this course are £3,417. We also recommend that you purchase your own set of high quality scissors and tools for grooming.

You will come to college for one day a week, 34 weeks of the year. The course will start at the end of September and complete mid-June the following year. This will be face-to-face teaching for six hours per day and will contain a large amount of practical teaching as well as some theoretical delivery (approx. two hours theory and four hours practical). You will also be expected to complete at least 2 hours per week of online learning to supplement the theoretical aspects of the course.

Assessment for this course is through a range of methods. You will need to keep a practical portfolio of a minimum of 20 full grooms across the course, and you will need to do a question-based theory workbook portfolio as well. There is a practical first aid assessment, as well as three formal grooms to be recorded which are part of the practical grooming portfolio. These have to be across multiple coat types and have the styling completed in a two hour time limit.

This could lead to a job as a dog grooming or dog grooming stylist, or even potentially setting up and running your own business.

To qualify for this course you must have either a Level 2 Dog Grooming Assistants qualification (with salon experience) or more than two years salon experience and the ability to prove competencies with portfolio and customer reviews. A fast track option maybe available if extensive experience is evident and subject to completion of a practical test.

You may be able to bring your own dogs in to groom or client dogs in for grooming. This will be in discussion with your lecturer and may be subject to a student groom charge. You will need to provide your own scissors or grooming starter pack, details can be gained from the Student Services team.
