Carpentry and Joinery students have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College.

Our state-of-the-art workshops are equipped with specialist tools and resources for a wide range of creative craft subjects. We are able to offer you the opportunity to develop your skill set to the highest level and prepare you for your future career.

Guided by our specialist staff and expert guest lecturers you’ll develop your skills in joint making, use portable power tools and second fix carpentry work.

Through our strong industry links you will also have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities including site visits and take part in competitions to hone your skills on a world stage.

This course will advance your knowledge of proper carpentry practice whilst on site. Students will develop their woodwork skills as well as widen their knowledge of construction technology and tool maintenance.

You will also be taught the safe set-up and operation of a circular saw. You will gain a general understanding of theory and develops the practical skills needed to work as a carpenter or joiner. This includes hanging doors, fixing architrave and skirting, constructing kitchen and bathroom units and setting out and fixing roofs.

You will cover modules including:

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication - A deeper insight into the different aspects of the construction industry.
  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing - How to erect and install floor joists, floor coverings and roof components.
  • Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs - How to erect internal partition walls, door frames and linings also stairs and balustrading.
  • Carry out second fix operations - Learn how to hang a door, install latches and fix architrave and skirting. Also how to install kitchen units and jointing worktops.
  • Carry out carpentry maintenance - This unit includes replacing sash cords, installing guttering and splice repairs to timber.
  • Set up and operate a circular saw - How to safely change blades and use a table saw.

In addition you may find it useful to purchase a textbook for your course. This can be purchased from a range of suppliers including Amazon.

This is a full time course taking place on three days per week from 9am - 4:30pm. There will be a mix of practical and theoretical work which are split into 1 hour - 1.45 hour lessons. You will have regular breaks including a lunch break.

Assessment consists of the following:

  • Practical assessments
  • Externally assessed Exams
  • Internal Exams
  • Written coursework and workbooks

Students generally progress onto a higher level of Carpentry and Joinery course, move into a job with training (such as an apprenticeship) or move into full time employment.

Four GCSE passes at Grade 3 (D) or above including English and Maths or Level 1 Diploma in a related Construction subject.
