Our Level 2 Diploma in Wood Machining is designed to take your practical and design skills to the next level.

You will have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College. Our state-of-the-art workshops are equipped with specialist tools and resources so that you are able to develop your skills in a wide range of creative craft subjects.

Guided by our specialist staff and expert guest lecturers you’ll learn skills in both wood machining and hand-crafting furniture, to equip you for employment or further study.

Through our strong industry links you will also have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities including site visits and take part in competitions to hone your skills on a world stage.

Guided by our expert lecurers you will focus on the correct use and design of furniture and building. Through practical and theoretical learning you will develop your understanding of the health and safety aspects of a workshop environment, proper care and maintenance for tools and a respect for and deep knowledge of the trade.

You will cover modules including:

  • Developing and applying a knowledge and understanding of health and safety within furniture making environments.
  • Developing and recognising professional responsibilities within furniture making environments and the world of work in general.
  • Developing a knowledge and understanding of timber technology to support the selection, preparation and use of wood-based materials.
  • Developing the hand skills and techniques required to produce basic geometric, pictorial and working drawings.
  • Developing the hand skills and techniques required to manipulate woodworking hand tools to measure, mark up, cut and assemble wooden joints.
  • Manufacturing a range of basic items of furniture, using a range of hardwoods.
  • Manufacturing wood-based components, using industry standard powered hand tools and woodworking machinery.
  • Developing a sound ethical knowledge and understanding of sustainability within the timber trade.
  • Planning for career pathways in the furniture industry.

Work safety boots and an apron are required to be worn at all times when working in the Furniture Workshops.

The cost of materials for assessment pieces is covered by the College however if you would like to take pieces produced as part of your training portfolio home once completed, you will need to make a contribution towards the cost of materials.

This is a full time course taking place on three days per week from 9am - 4:30pm. There will be a mix of practical and theoretical work which are split into 1 hour - 1.45 hour lessons. You will have regular breaks and hour lunch.

Assessment consists of the following:

  • Practical assessments
  • Externally assessed Exams
  • Internal Exams
  • Written coursework and workbooks

You could progress to a Level 2 Diploma in Furniture Making. Alternatively, you could go into employment as a trainee furniture maker, furniture designer or wood machinist.

GCSEs at grade 1-2 (E-G) or equivalent and evidence of a strong interest in making furniture or previous experience in the furniture making industry will also be considered.
