Our Level 1 Certificate in Furniture Making is designed to take your woodworking skills to the next level by developing your practical skills in design.
If you are passionate about creating bespoke pieces of furniture from scratch, then this course is the starting point for you.

Furniture Studies students have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College. Our state-of-the-art workshops are equipped with specialist tools and resources for a wide range of creative craft subjects.

Guided by our specialist staff and expert guest lecturers you’ll develop your skills in using hand and power tools to hand-craft furniture, to equip you for employment or further study.

Guided by our expert lecturers, you'll learn to craft beautiful wooden furniture using various tools and technologies.

Modules include:

  • Health and safety in furniture making.
  • Timber technology for sound judgements in the trade.
  • Furniture construction methods for design and manufacturing.
  • ITC skills for basic geometric, pictorial, and working drawings.
  • Hand skills for intermediate geometric, pictorial, and working drawings.
  • Furniture design process for creating basic items.
  • Manufacturing intermediate furniture with hardwoods, fixtures, and fittings.
  • Making and attaching doors, drawers, and fittings.

The cost of materials for assessment pieces is covered by the College however if you would like to take pieces produced as part of your training portfolio home once completed, you will need to make a contribution towards the cost of materials.

This is a full time course taking place on three days per week from 9am - 4:30pm. There will be a mix of practical and theoretical work which are split into 1 hour - 1.45 hour lessons. You will have regular breaks including a lunch break.

Assessment consists of the following:

  • Practical assessments
  • Externally assessed exams
  • Internal Exams
  • Written coursework and workbooks

You could progress to one of the following pathways:

Level 2 Diploma in Wood Machining

L2 Diploma in Furniture Making and Furnishing or alternatively, you could go into employment as a trainee furniture maker, furniture designer or wood machinist.

L2 Diploma in Site Carpentry

Further progression following completion of a L2 would be to continue onto the Level 3 Diploma in Furniture Studies - Design and Make

There are no entry requirements however your place is subject to completing an interview with the Tutor.

Work safety boots and an apron are required to be worn at all times when working in the Furniture Workshops.
