Do you have a keen interest in trees? Our Level 2 Technical Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture will provide you with the skills of how to manage, cultivate and care for trees and forests.

Our Arboriculture students have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College. With over 440 hectares of estate including woodland, large specimen trees and ornamental shrubs our fully equipped workshops have a range of machinery including brushwood chippers and chainsaws.

Guided by our expert staff and guest lecturers you’ll gain invaluable practical experience combined with theory-based learning.

Through practical and theory based learning you will develop your skills in identifying and surveying a wide range of trees and plants. Guided by our expert lecturers you will learn the operation and maintenance of relevant equipment to ensure safe working practises. You'll take part in theory sessions based on the science behind trees.

At Level 2 you will also be learning how to assist in climbing and all ground based operations including the basic knowledge of cross-cutting and maintenance of chainsaws and the felling of small trees.

If you are aged under 19 years of age at the start of your course you will not have to pay any fees. If you are aged 19 or over there may be support available, depending on your existing levels of qualifications. Please speak to our Student Support Team for more information.

This is a full time course taking place on three full days per week. There will be a mix of practical and theoretical work which are split into two hour lessons. You will have regular breaks including a lunch break.

Vocational and professional qualifications are taught through college based theory and practical lessons with further learning and understanding developed via directed self-study. Assessment consists of internally set coursework and assignments, and the production of a portfolio of work.

You could progress on to one of our Level 3 courses (subject to achieving the qualification and the GCSE grade requirements), or an apprenticeship. Alternatively, you could go on to work as an assistant groundsman, assistant estate worker or assistant tree surgeon.

Four GCSEs at grade 2-3 (D-E) or equivalent. or a Level 1 in a related subject.

The majority of our students progress from Level 2 in to employment or an apprenticeship.

As with all of our courses in arboriculture and/or forestry sustainability is at the core of the industry and therefore our teaching must reflect this. Social, economic and environmental factors are central to woodland and tree management, known as the three pillars of forestry, these have sustainability at the core to ensure that we have trees, woodlands and forests for the future.
