The art of stonemasonry has existed for centuries and has developed to produce some of the world’s most iconic buildings and architectural wonders.

Our Level 2 Diploma in Stonemasonry will develop your skills and begin to introduce technical skills including letter cutting.

As a stonemasonry student you will have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College. You will use our unique workshop equipped with state-of-the-art tools and facilities to develop a range of skills in stone carving, letter cutting, conservation, restoration and construction.

As part of your course you will have the opportunity to undertake commercial experience at the beautiful and historic Exeter Cathedral, where you will learn and develop practical skills that will be vital for your future career in Stonemasonry.

This course is free for students aged 16 – 19. For students over 19, The Worshipful Company of Masons funds the majority of the course fees on application. Find out more about this funding here.

Guided by our expert lecturers you will develop new skills including your construction drawing and geometry skills as well as practical skills in working natural stone. You will cover modules including:

  • Principal of architectural heritage, conservation and restoration
  • Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Working Stonemasonry components
  • Setting out and templet making for Stonemasonry Components
  • Fixing Stonemasonry Components
  • Stretch and Challenge: Stone carving & Letter Cutting

Hi-Vis and Work Safety Boots are required to undertake this course. All of our equipment is supplied by Baca. A full equipment list can be found here.

This is a full time course taking place on three full days per week. There will be a mix of practical and theoretical work which are split into two hour lessons.

In additional to your vocational classes you will also need to attend English and maths if you have not already achieved a grade 4 (C) or above. There will also be pastoral classes during the week. You will have regular breaks including a lunch break.

Assessment consists of the following:

  • Practical assessments
  • Externally assessed Exams
  • Internal Exams
  • Written coursework and workbooks

Students generally progress onto a higher level of Stonemasonry course, move into a job with training (such as an apprenticeship) or move into full time employment.

Grade 3 (D) in GCSE English and maths or a Level 1 in a related construction subject.
