T Level in Building Services Engineering - Plumbing & Heating

T Level Level 3

Study mode Full time
Location Moulton
Level Level 3
Start date Sept 2025
Duration 2 years

Delivered over two years, T Levels aim to provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door to highly skilled employment, higher level studies or a Higher Apprenticeship.

The equivalent of three A Levels, T-Levels are recognised by UCAS to support applications to study at university.

Please note that you must be aged 16 - 18 years old when you start a T Level qualification.

Year 1

The first year builds solid foundations and gives you practical skills to use in any construction job – and you make a start in building your plumbing and central heating engineering knowledge.

You cover:

1. health and safety
2. science, design, construction and the built environment
3. building technology
4. industry
5. sustainability
6. measurement
7. information and data
8. relationship management
9. digital technology
10. commercial/business

Year 2

In your workshop and classroom sessions, you learn to install, commission, maintain and decommission heating and plumbing systems and, yes, before you ask, that includes drainage, plumbing hot and cold water systems and central heating systems.

With all that knowledge in your head, you start your 45-day industry placement, and hands-on experience to put all the theory into practice. And just being onsite as part of a team, developing your communication, workplace and problem-solving skills is a great opportunity.

You can do your placement as block release, day release or a bit of both – whatever works for you. We help you make the decision and find a place that really works. To get down and dirty, this is when you work on an employer set project, putting all your theories and skills into the real world.

If you need an extra hand with English, maths and digital skills relevant to building services engineering, our tutors work with you to get that all-important level 2 in English and maths, so you can complete the course and head into your career.

You will need to come to College equipped with stationery, steel toe capped boots and a hi-vis vest or jacket. You can find a full equipment list here.

Your week will consist of three full days at College covering practical, theory and research on given topics.

You will need to complete work outside of given College days to complete assignments and work experience.

Similar to A-Levels, the grade you gain from a T-Level is based on your work in school. This makes up 80% of the T-Level and comprises a core component and an occupational specialism.

You get a grade of Pass, Merit, Distinction, or Distinction* overall. You get separate grades in each component. The 20% is covered by extended industry placement.

Year 1:

  • Core Assessment: Externally Set Test – Paper 1 and Paper 2 are both graded A*-E.
  • Employer Set Project: Externally assessed project work is graded A*-E.
  • Industry Placement: Evidence log to show completion of hours required and evidence of development of technical skills and application of knowledge in a workplace environment.

Year 2:

  • Synoptic assessment to judge how well the competence requirements have been met. Graded: Distinction, Merit or Pass.
  • Industry Placement: Evidence log to show completion of hours required and evidence of development of technical skills and application of knowledge in a workplace environment.

This qualification focuses on the development of knowledge and skills needed for working in the BSE industry, which will prepare learners to enter the industry through employment or as an apprentice.

The completion of this qualification also gives you the opportunity to progress onto higher education courses and training.

You must be aged 16 - 18 years old to study a T-Level qualification

You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at grades 4 - 9 (A - C) to enrol onto this course, including English, maths and a science.

T Levels are brand new qualifications that are equivalent to three A-Levels. We will support you to find a suitable company to complete your work placement.

Specific details of the structure of the course and study mode are subject to change as we finalise the details of the new course with the Awarding Body.
